The weather for February finished rather hot and I’m not sure if it had anything to do with things generally, but I ended up with a range of problems including migraines which saw me in out of the Drs and ended with a hospital visit mid March. I’m not going to go over all the details other than to mention health had a small impact on the month and tasks that were undertaken. Currently I’m sitting here feeling okay but do need to follow up with any additional checks required in terms of things.

So what did take place in terms of the site this month?
Lipcrack approached two new groups in terms of band awareness. The first, charitable organizations. We are well aware that many of these groups work with music entertainment for larger events, sponsorship and fund raising so it seemed like a good choice for business prospecting. It didn’t quite turn out that way and fairly soon mailouts were put on hold while some of these business groups tried to determine how we had their email. For some reason they weren’t as open to experience as we might have liked. In fact fairly soon that list was abandoned for being the biggest hassle we’ve had with a mailing list.

Then it was on to Festivals. Believe it or not Lipcrack were able to locate 400 Festivals online. We are sure there’s more and new one’s seem to pop up all the time but we let them know if they were looking for an act, we’re available, merely testing the water. At this time 2 have responded and it seems as though we would have to be at live production status to participate. Basically that means, we’d probably need lighting, stage show and back drop at bare minimum and a front of house production team. If anyone happens to be interested in working with Lipcrack to take things to this level, feel welcome to contact the band via email or leave a message in the Forum. Our next step would be to look into any arts, funding or grants that could be utilized to bring things to that level. If something eventuates great if not, like all those other bands out there, having a website where tracks can be accessed is a close second.

Now is where it gets tricky though!
Notice how the cost of things are going up? Well, we’ve been hit with the second price increase in two subsequent years from the hosting company and like someone with a house mortgage, it actually was time to start looking for a better price in terms of hosting. There are a couple of hosting companies offering better value given the task itself and the returns for it. Here’s an example of costs and what does and doesn’t work. I was informed recently that someone on Spotify had received 70,000 airplays of their band and received over $100 dollars in fee’s for the airplay. That’s actually a close to top tier band that does play festivals and that amount of payout does not cover the cost of hosting a band website. So in the long run is it actually worth the bother?

My answer to that is, if you enjoy tinkering on the internet and have a few skills that you like working with and want to develop it is. But there is actually a point where it just becomes an expensive hobby that is going to require more and more money to keep it afloat. It’s the reason why record labels exist – artists need money to become financially viable and many don’t end up making returns. And like any business manager eg opening a restaurant, when the risk to reward ratio is favourable you go for it, when it’s not, merely minimizing loss is as good as it gets. Do I think there’s still potential for Lipcrack to enjoy some success from this task, absolutely!

We might even develop another EP! But we are considering a new hosting company. It’s annoying to have to do it but a 20% cost increase gives you an indication of how those business groups are operating to stay afloat and bring in the returns for their respective organizations.

And that’s about it for now, there is some new equipment on the way that will be put through some testing and there will be more news on that next month.

For now back to some mail outs and we will catch up with people for some news next month.

Lipcrack

News for March.
